Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned her family and she was fostered by her mother grandmother and godparents. When she was a little girl, Catherine Ford struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford became interested in the profession of acting in her teenage years and she was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she was not a fit. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1990. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. The stage was her main focus as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up humor and humour, which she added to her repertoire in 1996, quickly gained her attention.
